Naturally talented instrumentalists, Hazel and Emily have been playing together since childhood, and the featured song is on their latest CD, In the Air or the Earth on the RootBeat Records label.
Growing up in London, but with strong family links to Hampshire, they often include songs from the county and elsewhere in the south of England in their repertoire. The song was originally set in the American War of Independence, but within the folk revival, it has been relocated to Flanders during the Napoleonic Wars, although this new setting has a resonance for the current First World War commemorations. The source singer is Devonian, Sam Fone, who was one of Sabine Baring-Gould’s most prolific singers.
